Our approach to art therapy

At Gari Yala Cultural and Bush Camp, Art Therapy is a gentle, creative way of reconnecting with self, culture, and community. It’s for anyone seeking healing, self-awareness, or a deeper sense of belonging — whether through individual sessions or group experiences on Country.

Reconnect with self

Our approach integrates Indigenous ways of knowing with Western therapeutic frameworks, honouring story, silence, and the wisdom of the land.

Explore emotions

Through painting, weaving, and other art-making processes, participants are invited to explore emotions, identity, and transformation in a safe, supportive space.

Grounding and renewal

The feeling we hope people take away is one of grounded calm, truth-telling, and renewal — a sense of being seen, heard, and connected to something larger than themselves.

Rooted in Country, culture, and deep listening

What sets Gari Yala apart is the way our Art Therapy is held through the practice of Dadirri — the Aboriginal tradition of deep listening, stillness, and inner knowing.

Embracing Dadirri and nature

This slow, respectful way of being shapes every session, inviting people to pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves, with Country, and with community. We also draw on Aboriginal art techniques, natural materials, and the rhythms of the land.

A culturally safe space for healing

Sessions often take place outdoors or incorporate elements from Country — ochre tones, natural textures, patterns inspired by waterways, tracks, and the stories held in the landscape. These touches make the experience different from mainstream art therapy. It’s not just about making art — it’s about remembering who you are, honouring culture, and creating space for healing that is gentle, grounded, and relational.

What to expect from your session

In our Art Therapy sessions, people are invited into a slow, gentle creative process shaped by Dadirri — deep listening, stillness, and inner awareness. The activities are simple, grounding, and connected to Country, allowing each person to express their story in their own way.

Clay work

To support grounding, emotional release, and sensory connection.

Painting and mark-making

Inspired by Country, waterways, tracks, and personal symbols.

Natural material art

Using textures, colours, and elements from the land.

The beautiful things created are not about being “perfect” or “artistic” — they are expressions of truth, emotion, memory, and healing. People often leave with pieces that feel deeply personal: a symbol of strength, a representation of their journey, or a tangible connection to their inner world.

Experience profound change and connection

Most people leave Gari Yala Art Therapy with a deep sense of calm, clarity, and reconnection — with themselves, with their story, and with Country. The biggest change is an inner one: a feeling of coming home to yourself.

A clearer understanding

Of their emotions and inner world.

A renewed sense of strength

Of identity and self-worth.

A softer, steadier nervous system

Feeling grounded and at ease.

A sense of belonging

And connection that lingers long after the session ends.
